PERINATALITY

Prenatal Physiotherapy

Prenatal physiotherapy is a preventive and therapeutic approach that supports pregnant women through the physical changes and challenges associated with pregnancy.

It offers many benefits:

  • Strengthen and protect your body: By working on muscle strengthening, endurance and mobility, this practice helps maintain good physical condition and relieve common pain such as back pain, sciatica or pubalgia.

  • Improve posture and flexibility: Specific exercises help correct postural imbalances and increase flexibility, essential for coping with the body's adaptations during pregnancy.

  • Prevent and relieve discomfort: Whether it is circulatory, urinary or muscular problems, prenatal physiotherapy offers adapted and gentle solutions.

Why is this important?

  • By integrating exercises adapted to your needs, prenatal physiotherapy contributes to:

  • Prepare your body for childbirth by strengthening necessary muscles and improving mobility.

  • Reduce stress through better body management.

  • Promote faster and more effective postpartum recovery.

When and how to start?

From the beginning of the second trimester, it's possible to begin a personalized prenatal physiotherapy program. The sessions, conducted in a safe and supportive environment, include gentle exercises tailored to your pace, for comprehensive and calming support.

Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage is tailored to your needs and supports you throughout your pregnancy.

Objective :

  • Relieve tension: Massage helps reduce muscle pain, especially in the back, shoulders and legs, which are often put under strain during pregnancy.

  • Improve blood and lymphatic circulation: By stimulating circulation, it reduces the sensation of heavy legs and promotes better oxygenation of the tissues.

  • Soothe the mind: This moment of relaxation helps reduce stress and improve the quality of sleep.

How does a session take place?

Each session is personalized, performed with neutral oils adapted to pregnancy. The position is always comfortable and secure: lying on your side or semi-seated, with cushions to support the body.

When to start?

Prenatal massage is recommended from the second trimester of pregnancy, once the discomfort of the first few months has subsided. It can be practiced up until the end of pregnancy, with the agreement of your gynecologist.

Preparation for Childbirth

After a targeted assessment of your expectations, your knowledge and your desires, we will offer you active, practical and adapted preparation.

Our role is to give you concrete tools to live this experience with confidence, to strengthen the complicity and the active role of the co-parent in this unique moment and to answer your questions about childbirth.

Topics covered during the sessions:

  • The anatomy of the pelvis and perineum: learn to locate and mobilize these essential areas.

  • The physiology of childbirth: understanding the key stages to better understand them.

  • Pain management: discovering techniques to cope.

  • Breathing during labor: adopting rhythms that support you.

  • Positions during labor: finding those that promote comfort and progress.

  • Pushing techniques: mastering the movements that facilitate expulsion.

  • The role of the co-parent: encourage their active participation and support.

These sessions, based on a practical and interactive approach, can take place in different ways to suit your preferences and schedule.

  • Individual sessions: One-on-one, with or without your partner, these sessions allow you to benefit from personalized support, fully adapted to your needs. Expect approximately 5 sessions for complete preparation.

  • Hybrid format: A combination of small group sessions and individual meetings to benefit from both group discussions and personalized follow-up.

  • Intensive Group Workshops: Held on select Saturdays, these 3.5-hour workshops take place at SuperMums® Studio. They offer a dynamic and friendly setting to cover the essentials in a single session.

Birth Support

Our physiotherapists are accredited by the Delta CHIREC and IRIS SUD Ixelles hospitals. They offer support in the delivery room, day or night, if you feel the need. Their role is to be by your side to help you experience this unique moment with serenity and confidence, in collaboration with the medical team.

  • Stress and sensation management: Through relaxation, breathing and mobilization techniques, your physiotherapist will help you stay connected to your body and your sensations.

  • Optimizing labor: In conjunction with the midwife and gynecologist, she will guide you into positions that promote your baby's progress and comfort during labor.

  • Support for descent and expulsion: she will ensure that your efforts are as effective and appropriate as possible, respecting your choices and needs.

  • Co-parent support: By fully integrating the co-parent, it will give them the tools necessary to play an active and reassuring role.

Marine and Arianna work closely with the midwife, gynecologist, and hospital staff. Their goal is to add value to their expertise by helping you harness your physical and emotional resources to experience a birth that's right for you.

Do not hesitate to contact them to discuss your expectations and together consider the support that will suit you best.

Postnatal Physiotherapy

The postnatal period is a key phase in allowing your body to recover after childbirth, whether vaginal or by cesarean section. Postnatal physiotherapy supports you throughout this process, helping you regain physical comfort and prevent functional imbalances.

When to start?

At the office:

Postnatal physiotherapy can be started within the first few weeks after delivery. For women who have had an uncomplicated vaginal delivery, the first in-office sessions can begin 4 to 6 weeks postpartum. After a cesarean section, it is recommended to wait approximately 6 to 8 weeks to begin exercises designed to promote healing.

At home:

Home physiotherapy sessions offer tailored follow-up care, whether after a vaginal delivery or a cesarean section. They are provided in the period leading up to your return to postnatal physiotherapy sessions at the office. This personalized follow-up allows us to address your immediate needs while gently preparing you for your long-term recovery.

Physiotherapy after vaginal delivery

After a vaginal delivery, physiotherapy aims to:

Prevent and treat possible pain linked to muscle or ligament tension.

Re-educate the perineum to restore its tone and prevent problems such as urinary leaks or the feeling of heaviness.

Progressive abdominal rehabilitation to protect the weakened abdominal wall.

Work on posture to relieve the back and shoulders, which are often stressed when carrying the baby.

Physiotherapy after a cesarean section

Particular attention is paid to the scar area, with:

Techniques to improve scar mobility and elasticity, avoiding adhesions.

Progressive abdominal rehabilitation to protect the weakened abdominal wall.

Abdominal and hypopressive work to gently strengthen the abdominal muscles.

Gentle exercises to restore overall muscle strength while respecting healing.

Abdominal rehabilitation and diastasis

Diastasis recti, or abdominal muscle spacing, is common after pregnancy. Physical therapy offers specific exercises for:

  • Gently realign the abdominal muscles and strengthen the deep abdominal muscles.

  • Improve posture and prevent lower back pain.

  • Restore harmonious abdominal function while avoiding inappropriate exercises that could aggravate diastasis and poor distribution of intra-abdominal pressures.

Each rehabilitation program is personalized to your needs, with progressive exercises that respect your body. The goal is to help you regain your daily well-being by strengthening your muscles, restoring your posture, and restoring confidence in your physical abilities.

Perineal Assessment and Rehabilitation

Pelvic floor rehabilitation is an essential step after childbirth to restore a toned and functional perineum. It helps prevent or treat various disorders that can occur following pregnancy and childbirth, whether urological, gynecological, sexual, or digestive.

Disorders treated:

  • Urological disorders: Urinary leakage, overactive bladder, difficulty urinating or managing pressure from coughing or carrying weight.

  • Gynecological disorders: Pain, organ prolapse, post-surgical scars or pathologies such as endometriosis.

  • Sexual disorders: Pain during intercourse (dyspareunia), vaginismus or other disorders requiring multidisciplinary care.

  • Digestive and anorectal disorders: Constipation, anal or gas leaks, anismus, scars related to surgical procedures, etc.

Each rehabilitation begins with a complete and detailed assessment, which allows us to better understand your needs and establish a tailor-made treatment plan.

The techniques used

  • Perineal rehabilitation is based on a combination of adapted methods:

  • Abdominal and hypopressive work to gently strengthen the abdominal muscles.

  • Manual therapy and scar work to improve tissue mobility.

  • Muscle strengthening guided by palpation or using a probe (biofeedback).

  • Electrostimulation to gently stimulate muscles.

  • Use of ultrasound to visualize movements and optimize muscle work.

  • Advice and support for the possible use of a pessary.

  • A home exercise program

To extend and enhance the benefits of your sessions, you will be offered a personalized exercise program. These exercises allow you to continue your rehabilitation at your own pace and ensure lasting results.
